The County of Kent

The county of Kent has been called the Garden of England for over four hundred years.

It is one of the oldest counties in the country, and was a kingdom in Saxon times.

The county is also significant because it is a gateway to the continent. Kent boasts over 1000 square miles of magnificent countryside and 350 miles of unspoiled coastline.

Kent is graced with historic cities, busy market towns, quaint villages and tiny hamlets. There are more historic homes and castles than in any other county, and in excess of eighty country parks, picnic sites and nature reserves.

The sheer variety of traditional English countryside makes Kent a delight for any walker. There are over 4,200 miles of footpaths, bridleways and byways which network the county, allowing the walker to traverse coastal locations, ancient woodlands, forests, orchards, vineyards, hop gardens, lavender fields and acres of fields rich in crops.

There are the three major walking routes in the county: The North Downs Way, which wends its way through the Kent Downs, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; The Saxon Shore Way, which includes the magnificent White Cliffs of Dover and views of the coast of France; and the Greensand Way, which encompasses ancient and semi-mature woodland, numerous impressive houses, gardens and parks.

You will be spoilt for choice finding a beautiful walk and a lunchtime stop at a local country Inn throughout the county of Kent.
